What is this internet ‘thing’?

Not so long ago, believe it or not, this was a very common question. In 80’s and 90’s, internet was in its infancy. This is also when some of the most hilarious videos were recorded – some featuring adverts for ‘Guides to the internet’, some featuring TV stars getting the whole internet idea completely wrong, but all of them being unbelievably funny and odd.

ATT Worldnet Advert from 1997

Just in case you really, really want to know what the internet is, I’ll quote a popular, free, web-based, collaborative and multilingual encyclopaedia project called Wikipedia 😉

The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support electronic mail.
